Dystopian Society Fiction

Who knew that dystopian societies could be so much fun? One of the new trends in young adult fiction is to set stories in future societies that resemble our own culture and government gone bad. And I mean really, really, bad. What began with the Hunger Games trilogy has blossomed into a rich smorgasbord of books chronically our future mistakes and pain. One of my favorite new series is by Veronica Roth:

Divergent
Insurgent
Divergent 3 (yet to be named, but coming in October 2013)

The main character in this series, Beatrice Prior, lives in dystopian Chicago where society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
So, what are your favorite dystopian society tales?

The Infernal Devices Trilogy

I'm an admitted young adult fiction book junkie. It doesn't matter that I'm in my 40's, married, and have teens of my own; there is just something about the fast-paced, good-(almost) always-wins stories that keep me coming back again and again. I think it all began with Harry Potter, but the young adult fiction genre has grown to include many fantastic authors and books. Here is just one series with a new addition recently released:

The Infernal Devices, by Cassandra Clare

This trilogy is a prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series (information below). The third book in the series was released in April 2013 and I think I may even like this prequel series better than the original! Set in Victorian England, these stories keep the same tone of adventure and romance from the original series, but add the interest of being set in a time and place that may not be familiar to many teens.

Books in The Infernal Devices trilogy are:

Clockwork Angel
Clockwork Prince
Clockwork Princess

Books in The Mortal Instruments series:

City of Bones
City of Ashes
City of Glass
City of Fallen Angels
City of Lost Souls
City of Heavenly Fire (Coming September 2014)

Set in New York City, this series chronicles the adventures of teen Shadowhunters, part-angel warriors who fight demons to protect our world. Add werewolves, witches, warlocks, faeries, and a love triangle, and you get the general idea.
